DVT Prophylaxis

After an orthopaedic procedure like total hip and total knee replacements, patients are at risk for blood clots in the leg veins. This is called deep venous thrombosis, or DVT.

Some of the symptoms of a possible DVT include, but are not limited to, increased extremity pain, tenderness, swelling, and redness. A potential complication of a DVT is a pulmonary embolism, or PE. Signs of a possible PE include, but are not limited to, chest pain, shortness of breath, and a rapid heart rate. If you experience any of these possible signs of a DVT or PE you should notify your local primary care provider, or Dr. Fraser’s office at (705) 450-0117, or present to Emergency Department.

To prevent deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, you will require a total 2 weeks of Xarelto 10mg orally twice a day.   Compliance with anticoagulant use is your responsibility, and failure to do so could result in poor anticoagulation (increased risk of blood clots) or excessive anticoagulation (increased risk of bleeding problems).
